From a Film Producer to
a Home Designer

HOW JULIA CHASMAN DESIGN BEGAN

After a long career as a producer of feature films, Julia Chasman started to pursue her private passion – restoring older homes and decorating them with a unique flair.  Her first renovations were sold as thoughtful flips, and did so well that she had a waiting list for her homes.  She reached out to that waiting list to offer her services on a client basis, finding the right home for each family, and restoring it to their specifications; a new business was born in 2018 - Julia Chasman Design.

Soon her work expanded beyond historical remodels to include other styles, full-service design and decoration, and more, with homes all over the greater Los Angeles area and the high desert, in styles ranging from Spanish Colonial to Mid-Century Modern.

These days, Julia Chasman Design is a full-service residential design firm known for creating homes that feel artful, collected, and deeply personal. Guided by a love of pattern, color, and texture, our work layers styles and eras with a natural sense of harmony—always in close collaboration with our clients. Sustainability is woven into everything we do, from reimagining existing furniture to sourcing locally made, enduring pieces and salvaged architectural details. We value craftsmanship, character, and a meaningful connection to nature, ensuring each home feels lived-in, loved, and uniquely yours.

In filmmaking, I was finding stories and then figuring out how best to tell them. In the home space, I find it’s much the same.

PRINCIPAL DESIGNER & OWNER

Julia is the lead designer who oversees all the work at JCD. Her past work as a filmmaker serves her well. “Making a film is telling a story, and decorating a home is telling a story too – of the people who live there.” Filmmakers start with a dream and translate it into realistic terms. The same parameters apply in creating a home space, working with a design and creating it within the realities of a budget and schedule.

To round out her skillset and knowledge, Julia took courses at the UCLA School of Architecture and Interior Design, and embarked on a Podcast education, familiarizing herself with the experience of her favorite designers, architects and experts. After completing more than 10 homes of varying sizes and styles, Julia has the confidence to approach any challenge with complete assurance.

Our Values

Beauty and function are Aligned

If your home is comfortable, livable and strikes a joyful note, it is halfway to our goal of a beautiful design.  This is why we always start with the architecture and respect the provenance of the home.  Any solutions that can come from architectural adjustments (moving a wall, adding a window or skylight, moving plumbing fixtures, and changing lighting) have more to offer than decor alone can achieve.

1

Collaboration is Key

We respect our clients and want to guide you to achieve your goals – not dictate them.  We have a point of view, but we will always hold your goals as primary when we design your home.  We can help you define your goals, as well, if you aren’t sure of them.  Our best results have always come out of projects where we had a lively and spirited dialogue and collaboration with our clients.

Natural is Best

At JCD we believe in sustainability and the inherent beauty of natural materials, including stone, fabrics like wool or linen, leather, metals that patina and more.  Plants and a connection to the outdoors is another tenet of this value.  An adjunct to this is that the mark of the human hand is key to producing a home with life in it.  That’s why we value artisan or artist-made furnishings and art, and want to always include examples of the hand-made in our designs.  Vintage and antique furniture are another expression of the natural ethos; these pieces bring history and patina into the home, and their story becomes part of yours.
